Computer > Security

Many aspects are involved in proper security measures on your PC. There are many different types of malicious attacks that can compromise the security of your PC. These include viruses, worms, Trojans, windows exploits, and Denial of Service attacks. Many of these destructive programs can attach themselves to other software, files, or emails and replicate themselves, spreading the infection to any computer that uses the corrupted software, file, or opened the email. They can spread through floppy diskettes and email messages, but usually they must either be run or opened to be activated. Just downloading viruses will not spread or activate them. A virus can do a number of different things (i.e., disabling the ability to save files, damaging your hard drive). Every virus is slightly different from the next one in what it does, and often mutates to worsen the severity of his or her damage if left untreated. Early detection and treatment are very important.

Forms of Attack

Viruses
- A virus is a program, which is designed to create problems on your computer (e.g. deleting files, creating pop-up messages, etc).

Trojans
- A Trojan is a form of virus, which hides itself within normal files. (Named after the famous Trojan horse of course).

Worms
- A worm is a virus, which actively replicates itself and attempts to propagate itself onto other PCs through email or other network vulnerabilities.

Viruses

Viruses never stop. Every day it seems like there is a new version of Mydoom, Netsky, or Sober. These fast-spreading mass-mailing worms easily infect exposed PCs, forward themselves to your email contacts, and even help remote hackers hijack personal information.

That is why Virus Scans automatically scans your email, attachments and downloads, then immediately starts to clean infections. Easy to download, install and use, Virus Scan also automatically checks for virus updates whenever you go online, so your protection stays up-to-date against the latest Internet threats.
Protecting yourself from viruses is just minutes away. Virus Scan features comprehensive virus protection, automatic virus updates, small size for easy download, and a simple subscription plan with future upgrades.

Firewall's places a barrier between the Internet and your PC, helping to block hackers from accessing your computer. It also gives you the unique ability to track the apparent source of an attack. Learn what happens to your PC and report hacker activity to conveniently assist law enforcement.
Protection

Virus Protection

Norton Antivirus and MacAfee software automatically scans all inbound and outbound files to and from a computer and all network drives including users' h: drives. Users can also scan their h: drive or floppy disks on demand (click on the Norton or MacAfee icon on the desktop of the computer).

If a virus is detected, the system will automatically clean or quarantine the infected file and notify the user. As new viruses are created every day, it is possible that Norton or other anti-virus software would not recognize a virus. If you have a reason to believe that, your files are infected with a virus, visit the IT Helpdesk (Mynians) for assistance. Norton and MacAfee virus definition (data or .dat files) are updated on the computers as new data files are released.

Protecting Your Home Computer:

Recommendations

Owning a computer without virus protection is no longer an option in today's computing environment. It is recommended that anyone who owns a computer install virus protection software on that computer and update it on a regular basis.

Virus protection software can be purchased from any computer store or is offered on the internet. On average, virus protection software packages cost anywhere from $40 - $80.

Windows Update

Windows Update is a convenient method of keeping your Windows operating system up to date with any patches or security updates. It is highly recommended that you run Windows Update at least.
Windows Update can be run by going to Start -> Windows Update. This will open Internet Explorer and direct you to the Windows Update website. If a dialog pops up asking if you would like to install the Windows Update software, click OK. Then click Scan for updates. The software will then run, checking to see which updates are available for your system.

**If updates are available for your system, click Review and install updates Windows Update will show a list of available updates; it is recommended that you install all of them. Some updates are exclusive, and must be installed separately. If prompted, install these packages separately, and then run Windows Update again to continue installing the necessary updates.

**If you would like to forego some updates, you can click Remove to remove the item from the list of updates. Once you have a selection of updates you would like to install, just click Install Now. You will be prompted to reboot your system when you are finished. **
